Gui Caribe improves personal best in 50m freestyle; Leonardo Alcântara breaks South American record in 800m at 2026 Jose Finkel Trophy

At the 2026 Jose Finkel Trophy short-course swimming meet, two names drew particular attention from professionals: Gui Caribe with an improved personal best in the 50m freestyle, and Leonardo Alcântara with a new continental record in the 800m freestyle. Gui Caribe, 23, won the 50m freestyle with a time of 20.54 seconds, improving his personal best from 20.57 seconds. This performance made him the second-fastest Brazilian in short-course 50m history, behind Cesar Cielo's national record of 20.51 seconds set in 2026. On the all-time SCM 50m freestyle ranking, Gui Caribe currently sits at 13th place. Meanwhile, Leonardo Alcântara, 21, studying at the University of Alabama (USA), created the bigger surprise at the meet. He broke the South American record in the 800m freestyle with a time of 7:37.47, becoming the first South American to finish under 7:40. Notably, Alcântara's previous best was only 7:51.81 at the 2026 Jose Finkel, meaning he improved by nearly 14 seconds in just two years. The previous South American record belonged to Guilherme Costa with 7:41.23 (2026). Based on my experience following swimming competitions, Alcântara's 14-second improvement in the 800m is rare at the middle-distance. Normally, at this distance, athletes typically improve only 3 to 5 seconds per year with progress in pacing and energy distribution. Alcântara breaking double the average improvement suggests he may have significantly changed his training methods in the American university environment, or found a way to optimize his swimming strategy throughout the 800m. At the team level, Minas Tênis Clube continued to demonstrate strength by leading the team standings with 3,168 points, far ahead of second-place Pinheiros with 2,503.5 points. The meet also serves as an important qualifier for the 2026 Short Course World Championships, with qualification spots being tracked from the fifth day of competition. However, it should be noted that detailed technical data such as stroke rate, distance per stroke, or front/back-half split analysis has not yet been released. This limits deeper evaluation of tactical factors. For Gui Caribe, the 20.54 seconds still falls short of Cielo's national record, but his 13th all-time ranking shows he is maintaining consistent world-class performance. For Alcântara, the question is whether the 7:37.47 is sufficient to meet the 2026 World Championships qualification standards, and whether this impressive improvement rate can be maintained as he enters full professional competition in the USA.
